Port of Spain was an amerindian fishing village before the Spanish and the English came to colonize the island and expand the area. The vast majority of the town was covered in mangroves and they were cleared out in order to build the government buildings. San Jose de Oruna was the previous capital before the governor moved his seat to the current de facto capital. It was with the appointment of the next governor that the town began its expansion eastwards and growth into the central hub it is today. Today, the town is still laid out in its familiar grid pattern and most of the colonial buildings still remain. There are museums about the history of the island and the city. This makes a trip through this amazing establishment a sight to behold as well as an educational experience.

Next you will be treated to a tour of the famous Fort George which was built in 1804 to protect against the French under the Napoleon Rule. The colonists were faced with the constant attacks and raids from the French who were attempting to take controls of the island. This fort was built along the Gulf of Paria where the French ships were culminating attacks. However, despite all the military preparations the fort was never used defensively as the French closed in on other forts around the coast. This fine establishment ceased to be a military base in 1846. But there are remnants of the battles of other areas as well at parts of the fort itself. There is also a signal tower that was created by a leader of an Ashanti Tribe in the island.

After your tour of this fort you will be carried through an hour's long scenic journey through the mountains of the Northern Range in order to get to your destination, Maracas Beach. A beach full of culture and beauty, this is one of the largest and most popular beaches in the island. It is close to the size of Port of Spain and is protected by a large bay which provides the perfect swimming conditions as it is not too sunny but not too cold and not too windy but not too stagnant. These conditions attract many tourists every year who are intrigued by the food choices and the items provided by the multiple vendors that are scattered around the area.

At the end of your tour, enjoy a comfortable ride back to your hotel with a heart filled with Trinidad and Tobago!
